Winter Driving Tips From the SheriffTop
• Before traveling, check the forecast and let someone know your travel route. For Ohio Road Conditions, call (800) OH-ROADS. You may also go to www.buckeyetraffic.org
to check and in some cases view Ohio road conditions.
• Keep your gas tank full, if possible.
• Carry a winter driving kit which should include: blankets, flashlight and extra batteries, a brightly colored cloth, sand (or cat litter), shovel, candle, matches, non-perishable high calorie food, a first aid kit, jumper cables, and cell phone.
Drive according to road conditions:
• Allow extra time to get to your destination.
• Clear all windows of ice and snow and remove snow from hood, roof, headlights, and taillights.
• Beware of bridges, underpasses, shaded areas, and intersections where ice is quick to form and slow to melt. Because of increased belt tightening by some jurisdictions, roads and bridges may not be treated with salt as early and often as in the past. Use extra precaution.
• Slow down to increase traction. Don't use cruise control on slick roads.
• Avoid abrupt stops and starts; slow down gradually and keep wheels turning to avoid losing traction.
• Use low beam headlights to decrease glare from ice.
Should you become stranded:
• Don't leave your car, it's the best protection you have.
• Tie a brightly colored cloth to your antenna if you need help.
• Roll down your window a small amount for fresh air.
• Keep the exhaust pipe free of blockage to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
• Don't panic, an idling car on average uses only one gallon of gas per hour.

Jury Duty ScamTop
The Buckeye State Sheriffs' Association has notified all Ohio sheriffs of a potential scam that could hit our area. Currently it is being found in several states and has become a major problem for individuals victimized by it.
Individuals are calling citizens, claiming that they are affiliated with the criminal justice system, and for the purpose of jury duty these individuals are trying to verify Social Security numbers and dates of birth associated with the names of the citizens they are calling. They have been successful, and as one can imagine it has created a nightmare for the victims.
Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn states that this is not a procedure that is utilized by any court system, law enforcement agency or the criminal justice system within Wood County. Please be on your guard, and never give anyone your vital information over the phone. If it is a legitimate situation, they will certainly provide their name and return phone number; but even with that information, citizens should be very skeptical. One can always call the Sheriff's Office to report such solicitation so it can be checked from a law enforcement standpoint.
The Sheriff's Office is providing this information to the citizens of Wood County for the purpose of making them aware of this scam. If there are any questions pertaining to this matter, contact the Wood County Sheriff's Office at (419) 354-9137 or Sheriff Wasylyshyn directly at (419) 354-9008.
