Sheriff James Telb and Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn announce that the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and the Wood County Sheriff’s Office have been conducting a joint investigation regarding false competency certificates filed through their offices by individuals applying for Concealed Carry Weapon licenses.
Felony charges have been filed against Jason Hernandez of Perrysburg Township and Michael Davenport of Northwood. Hernandez is alleged to have sold numerous certificates to persons who paid money but did not complete the minimum twelve hours of instruction required by Ohio law. Davenport allegedly was paid a referral fee by Hernandez.
Approximately 110 false certificates were filed at the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office and about 22 false certificates were filed at the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Telb and Sheriff Wasylyshyn are investigating all of the CCW permit holders whose certificates were issued by Hernandez. All of the Sheriff’s offices surrounding Wood and Lucas Counties including the state of Michigan have been contacted to advise them of the false certificates and the on-going investigation.
Mark Wasylyshyn, Wood County Sheriff, stated, “Charges are pending against all those CCW holders who falsely obtained their permits.”
Anyone who has falsely obtained their CCW permit is encouraged immediately to contact their respective Sheriff’s Office.
