Q. How do I renew my Carrying Concealed Handgun Permit?

The Ohio Revised Code provides for the renewal of a CCW license no earlier than 90 days prior to the expiration of the license.

To renew the CCW license, the applicant must present a renewal application which includes a statement that the applicant has re-read the CCW pamphlet and a new passport-sized color photo taken in the past 30 days. The applicant must also provide that the licensee at one time had a competency certification. A valid license, expired license, or any other previously issued license that has not been revoked is prima-facie evidence that the licensee at one time had a competency certification. The applicant must also have a valid photo identification.

The applicant will also be required to submit to fingerprint verification for a background check. The cost of a renewed CCW license is $50 for Ohio residents of more than 5 years and $74 for Ohio residents who have not lived in Ohio for 5 years.

Upon the successful completion of the background check, a new license will be issued with the original license number with a new date of expiration that is five years from the date of the renewal. During the renewal process, the current license (if not past the original expiration date) will remain valid, but must be surrendered to the Sheriff's Office upon issuance of the renewed license.
